About the event
Join us to support community science for migratory fish in the Connecticut River! We are seeking volunteers for Monday, September 23rd at 9am in Turners Falls, MA.
Every year the Turners Falls Cabot Station drains their canal for maintenance purposes. Unfortunately, this process leaves thousands of juvenile sea lampreys stranded without water and exposed to harsh elements. We only have a few hours to find and rescue as many of them as we can. Because of this tight timeline and the size of the canal, we need your help!
Connecticut River Conservancy is coordinating with the USGS S.O. Conte Anadromous Fish Research Laboratory to rescue larval and juvenile sea lamprey in coordination with FirstLight Power (owners of the hydropower facility). Some of the ammocoetes and juveniles will be taken to the Conte Lab for research while others will be released below the dam after the event. This effort will support ongoing conservation science for this species and the Connecticut River watershed more broadly.
Please note that due to new safety guidelines, this year’s event can only have volunteers who are 18+. All volunteers will also be provided with orange safety vests.
