Dear Mr. Herron:
For nearly a decade, the people of the Connecticut River valley have been asking Entergy Nuclear to reduce the amount of thermal pollution that you’re discharging into the Connecticut River at your Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant in Vernon, VT.
According to your own studies, the thermal pollution from the plant increases the temperature of the entire Connecticut River for at least 50 miles.
There is an alternative to pumping hot water—some of it as hot as 105 degrees—into the Connecticut River. You can use the plant’s cooling towers to stop the discharge of thermal pollution. As your neighbor, one who uses and loves the river, I am asking you to be a good neighbor.
You aren't using the cooling towers at Vermont Yankee enough to protect our river and wildlife.
The Connecticut River is New England’s longest river, stretching for over 400 miles from its source to the sea. Our Great River is one of only fourteen in the nation that is designated as an American Heritage River and the Connecticut River watershed is the only watershed designated as a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Refuge. The River supports a diversity of wildlife, fish, and plants and provides sanctuary and enjoyment for many recreational users who use it to fish, swim, boat and walk alongside.
But you’re dumping hot water into our river and threatening our wildlife.
The Connecticut River is not your dump. Be a good neighbor. Use your cooling towers.
Sincerely,
