We are the sole regional independent advocate and voice for clean water across the entire Connecticut River basin.

Clean, healthy water is a basic need for all living things.  We advocate for clean water throughout the watershed – water that serves over 2 million residents and is home to more than 5,000 species of plants, insects, fish and animals that share our great basin.  Clean water is our most important mission.

We work on all fronts, from minimum flow requirements to thermal and chemical pollution, from protection of wetlands to monitoring hydro and dam licenses, sewage discharge permits, water allocation, and land development.  We work in a four-state region on issues that will affect the basin’s uplands and lowlands, headwaters and tidal marshes, surface waters and aquifers, forests and farms, and cities and towns, for generations to come.

  • We’re leading the battle to clean up urban sewage in metropolitan Springfield, Chicopee and Holyoke, MA. In 2006 we helped win a great victory in the struggle to stop more than 1 billion gallons of raw sewage per year from pouring out of the Hartford Capital District’s sewage system and into neighborhood basements, streams and rivers. The benefits to residents, fish, and wildlife will be felt all the way to Long Island Sound.
  • CRWC also leads the group of partners working to halt a power company’s plans to further heat up the Connecticut River in southern Vermont and New Hampshire at its Vermont Yankee nuclear plant. We will continue to fight Entergy’s money saving plan to send millions of gallons of heated discharge into the river daily.  Shad populations have collapsed since Entergy increased its summer discharges in 1991.  Any further warming continues this reckless experiment and further jeopardizes aquatic health.
